Black Mahogany Moodymann Rarest

Review: The Moods & Grooves Classics series - in which vintage, long deleted gems from the back catalogue get another airing - continues with a strong quartet of tracks from Kenny Dixon Jnr and Rick Wade. The two untitled tracks from Dixon, under his occasional KDJ moniker, originally slipped out way back in 2000. Both are superb, with the goodtime shuffle of 'Untitled 2' (all jangly house pianos and looped disco-influenced grooves) just losing out to the slower, African-inspired 'Untitled 1' in the 'EP highlight' stakes. Wade's two contributions - deep, spacious, blazed and deliciously melodious - are taken from his 1999 Quantum Expression EP. Of these, it's the enveloping, jazz-flecked warmth of 'Forever Night' that stands out Read more. Review: For those of a certain age, there's no more exciting a combination of remixers than Juan Atkins and Egyptian Lover. Thus the prospect of them both taking on Moodymann's classic spoken word sex house anthem 'Freeki Mutha F cker' is almost too much to handle!

It's the former who steals the show here, revisiting his Cybotron days on a rework that offers the perfect fusion of organic deepness and cold, raw electro. There's something wonderful about the unlikely combination of Atkins' alien beats and bass - in particular the slowly pulsing sub - and the original's soft focus pianos, whispered vocals and drawn out strings. It's some futuristic business alright. Egyptian Lover takes a similar electro approach with solid results (think 808 cowbells and Tipper sub-bass wobbles), though it lacks the far sighted, back to the future appeal of Atkins' superb effort. In addition the A side holds a previously unreleased extended version of the original track and a short but sweet burst of some new KDJ material in the shape of 'California' BIG TIP!

Review:. REPRESS.

YouANDme drops a thumping warehouse refix of Moodymann's anthem, 'It's 2 Late 4 U & Me', which first appeared on the Ol' Dirty Vinyl EP via Mahogani last year. The original featured prominently among many a dancefloor cognoscenti's Best Of 2010 list, and it's thus a wise call by production duo of Martin Muller and Daniel Stroter to eschew any rapid transformations. They instead focus on some judicious filtering and a beefed up groove - simple yet highly effective stuff. Limited edition business pressed up on smoky clear vinyl. Review: Any release from Kenny Dixon Junior is cause for celebration, and this is no different. 'Sloppy Cosmic' sees him offering up an unofficial remake of Funkadelic's 'Cosmic Slop', seemingly re-made using the original master tapes.

The result is a typically deep, undulating and laidback excursion that makes great use of Bootsy's bass, George Clinton's vocals and Amp Fiddler's keys over 12 mesmerizing minutes. As we've come to expect, it oozes horizontal soul from every scratchy groove. Flip for the even more cosmic 'Hangover', a surprisingly sparse chunk of deepness featuring the ethereal vocals of Charlotte OC and more obviously floor-friendly beats.

If you want to hang out with Kenny for a bit, forget flying out to Detroit. Just get ahold of this album and you'll be sitting right there with him in his living room. This is not a collection of tracks that someone made for the sake of furthering their DJ career or making it big.
